A Book Review – Quitter.

I got a pre-order copy of Quitter by Jon Acuff it is his third book. His perhaps most widely known for his blog Stuff Christians Like and the book by the same name. Quitter plays to what I believe is Jon’s strengths, if you read SCL you know that Wednesdays are his more serious posts. He dials back the satire to drop the knowledge bombshell on you. Being a PK who turned out good, he is quite smart and shows some incredible insights. Jon uses humor to disarm you, then speaks wisdom and truth into your life. Here is a little description of what the book is about;

“From figuring out what your dream is to quitting in a way that exponentially increases your chance of success, Quitter is full of inspiring stories and actionable advice. This book is based on 12 years of cubicle living and my true story of cultivating a dream job that changed my life and the world in the process.
It’s time to close the gap between your day job and your dream job. It’s time to be a quitter.”

Most of the time I rip through a book in a couple of days, pausing on the good points and nodding as I cruise over the rest. This book I literally paused after chapter 1 and wrote him a thank you letter, doubt he read it, but felt compelled to do it. Occasionally a book speaks to you at the right time, in the right place. Quitter did that. I don’t want to be working anywhere else, I love COC. But I finished the book the same moment I got the start of my dream.

You see yesterday I finished the book, just as my pre-release copies arrived to distribute. The moment I finished reading about how to avoid pitfalls and traps of pursuing your dream, the beginning of mine arrived. 6 months late, I finished Quitter the same day Unlikely Hero arrived. It is wild reading a book that helps to inform you of how your job can help you pursue your dream.

It is no secret that I love to speak about Jesus. It is no secret that I equally love to write. It is no secret I love being a Pastor at COC. Quitter helped me to understand how my day job can help to build my dream. The book is well worth ordering, I believe it comes out on May 10th. My book I am hoping to have on Amazon June 1st. In the meantime thanks Jon for helping inform my dream, and avoiding some of the mistakes on the path to realizing it. Check out QuitterBook for more information.

I love it when a good book speaks truth to you at just the right moment. Today I fly out for Fiji to work with Homes of Hope. This is anything but a vacation, so please pray that God uses me and the team in powerful ways. I fully believe God will continue to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways.

God Bless.

I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Stuff Christians Like by Jon Acuff. He wrote a blog article called “Ordinary“. I was really moved by it, I am in the final stages of getting my first book published. If you have been talking to me you are probably sick of hearing me talk about it.

The thing is, I am excited.

I am excited that I accomplished one of my big challenges before I turn 30. I wanted to have a manuscript. God blessed me further, he provided the ways and means to get this thing published. So I am really excited to see something that I have spent so long on now come into existence. So I was having a moment today, when I wondered if people are sick and tired of listening to me talk about it. I wondered if anyone would actually read it. I wondered if, the considerable investment I made, would be worth it.

Early on when a publisher picked it up, I made a decision to spend decent money to get it published right. My thoughts were, I am expecting people to invest in the purchase of this book. So I need to be willing to commit my own finances to make it excellent. So I am excited, Unlikely Hero “Road to Extraordinary” is a couple of months from release. From a small publishing house, in Arizona and I am pumped. I am pumped for what God has in store for 2011.

So when I read Jon Acuff’s post I thought, that is exactly what my book is talking about, God uses you, someone Ordinary, to do something Extraordinary! So I want to leave you with a quote from Jon Acuff’s blog post called Ordinary.

“In 2011, people will tell you that you are ordinary. That might sting sometimes, but my hope is that by your ordinary life, you will point people toward an extraordinary savior. My prayer is that your ordinariness will be so pronounced that it will be astonishing and above all, it will reveal to friends and family members and neighbors and strangers, that you’ve been with Jesus.

A savior who loves doing extraordinary things with ordinary people like us.”
